Getting Left on Read? What It Means & Why You Shouldn’t Even Care

Anyone who has dated in the last 10 years knows how much it sucks getting left on read. You don’t have to take it lying down. Here is what to do about it.

Getting left on read is sort of the modern version of being stood up. It sucks. You don’t get an excuse or a reason or closure. And it can really make you feel bad about yourself.

As someone who has been left on read a time or two, I can honestly say I feel your pain. This is why most people turn off their read receipts. Most people that leave them on either don’t know or don’t care.

And that is what hurts. When you text someone and they read it without responding, it feels like you’re bothering them. It feels like they don’t care about what you said and don’t want to hear from you.

When you don’t get a response to an unread message, there are so many possible reasons for it, but when you actually know your message was read without a response there really is only one reason,  and it sucks. [Read: The essential tools you need to forget someone fast and move on]

Are you getting left on read by someone?

I know getting left on read seems like a simple thing. You would think you would know if you were left on read. But, sometimes it isn’t that simple.

You could technically be left on read, but not with the same rudeness that you think you were. Some texts or messages just don’t really need a response.

Think about your messaging style. Do you respond to every message? Do you always have something to say? How many times have you read a text and not responded? I do it at least once a day.

When someone doesn’t ask you a question, sometimes the conversation dies down and there is nothing else to say. [Read: How to handle the annoying wait when he doesn’t text back for days]

So, before jumping to conclusions, take a look at your last text. Did you say “lol”? Did you ask a question? Were you in the middle of a conversation or was it the end of a conversation? Think about if a response was really necessary or are you just second-guessing yourself? You don’t need to overanalyze every time you think you’re getting left on read by someone. [Read: When she doesn’t text back – why girls do that and what you need to do]

What to do about getting left on read

Okay, it may seem like getting left on read is just something you must endure. It is just a part of dating in current times. People no longer say they aren’t interested or even make up a bad excuse. Just getting left on read is now the norm.

But, you do not have to put up with it, and you do not have to let getting left on read get you down.

#1 Don’t double text. No one’s phone glitches and sends a text twice, so don’t double text. Also, don’t text them on “accident” pretending it was meant for someone else. And certainly, don’t reach out on other platforms.

I know you want to get them to respond. It is human nature. But, it is not worth it. No matter how rude they are for not answering, it is not worth embarrassing yourself. If they wanted to answer, they would have. [Read: The basic rules to play it cool with double texting]

#2  Relax. Try not to get in your head so much. Sometimes getting left on read is just that. It doesn’t mean they don’t like you. It doesn’t mean they are ghosting you or ignoring you on purpose.

People get busy. Maybe they read it and then forgot to respond or got distracted by something. Just let it be. If they want to talk to you, they will reach out eventually. Getting left on read by someone does not have to be as horrible as it sounds.

#3 Text someone else. Instead of focusing on the person not answering, text someone else. Talking with someone that gives you the attention you want and appreciates what you have to say will not only take your mind off of getting left on read, but it will feel way better. [Read: How often should you text someone? 17 must-know rules of texting]

#4 Let them know how you feel. I wouldn’t always recommend this, but if you are repeatedly getting left on read by a friend or even your partner, you should let them know how that makes you feel. I know it is just a text message that went unanswered, but your feelings about being left on read are valid.

They may think it isn’t a big deal, but if you tell them how it makes you feel, they can take more care in the future to make sure they answer.

#5 Forget about it. It can be hard to just let it go and move on, but it is really one of the more healthy choices to make. Instead of dwelling on what it means or worry about what this person thinks of you, let it go.

I know it is easier said than done, but if you can do it, it will give you a lot more confidence moving forward. Not everyone is a good texter. Not everyone will like you or want to talk. And that is okay. As long as you are happy with yourself, getting left on read does not have to affect you. [Read: Dry texting and the real meaning behind those one word responses]

#6 Ask them to turn off their read receipts. This is a decision you really have to make, but it could help you. Now, some people may not know they have their read receipts on and others leave it there for a reason. But, if you can’t help but feel hurt by being left on read, ask them if they can turn them off.

There is a downside to this because then you won’t know if they are ignoring you or just haven’t read your message, but that can be better sometimes. So, it really depends on what you think would be easier for you.

Now, you can’t ask a random person or a new crush to do this, but if you have a close friend or a partner you feel comfortable with, they should work with you to make sure you’re not upset. [Read: What does it mean when someone is ignoring your texts on purpose]

#7 Take the hint. I hate being this harsh, but sometimes this is the way the world works. I wish everyone would just say what is on their mind and let you know if they don’t want to talk, but that just is not the case.

By not answering or worse, by leaving you on read, this person may be sending you a message. They may not just be busy or forgetful, they may want you to get the picture without having to say anything. Yes, it is a coward’s move, but it still happens. It doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. [Read: Why do narcissists ignore texts and do the selfish things they do?]

So, next time you find yourself getting left on read, maybe just take it at face value. It is a form of rejection and that sucks. Once you accept it, you can move on to someone that answers their messages, or better yet turns off their read receipts like a sane person.

[Read: Understanding why someone could be blowing hot and then cold]

Getting left on read is one of the most confusing and upsetting parts of modern dating and communication. But you can learn to take it in your stride, and remember that it isn’t a reflection of you, but of the cowardly person who chose not to text you back.

Young Women Are Lonelier Than Ever Right Now (So Why Aren't You Approaching?)

women lonelier than everIf you're like most guys, you're not going out right now. Yet single women are lonelier than ever, and more receptive to your approaches than ever before.

I'm just about finished an epic "3 potential futures for dating in a post-lockdown world" article that explores the current and potential long-lasting social changes we're looking at, depending on one of three scenarios (lockdowns lift in 2022 as currently promised; rolling annual lockdowns become a normal part of Western disease-fighting; or permanent lockdowns are here to stay, with freedom passes awarded to good citizens).

But then you get into speculating about the future, and as neutral as I try to make an article like that it's hard not to veer into this side or that side, and, frankly, at this point, we're living in a dystopia, and talking about the dystopia we're in is sort of depressing.

And everyone's got enough depression to deal with already.

So instead I want to do something different.

Instead, let me set that huge long massive article aside (and maybe I will or won't publish it at some point) and do something else.

Let me talk to you about what women are going through right now.

How to Make Him Regret Not Choosing You & Look Cool Doing It!

We’ve all been there, he chooses someone else… and it’s not you. It’s painful, but here’s how to make him regret not choosing you instead!

They say “all is fair in love and war.” I do not agree. Instead, all is extremely unfair in love and war. Modern day tactics have become a little underhanded when it comes to affairs of the heart. So, listen up, if you have been scorned. This is how to make him regret not choosing you.

You see, we all like different people. We’re all attracted to different types, and that’s a good thing. Can you imagine if we all had the same type? It would be a bloodbath of shattered emotions!

No, thankfully, one person’s Brad Pitt is another person’s Gollum. Call it some kind of evolutionary trick to save us all from killing each other in the name of love. The problem is, not everyone is attracted to someone completely different. What if you find yourself with a rival in the love stakes?

This is where there is nothing at all that’s fair in love and war!

[Read: How to deal with the pain of loving someone you can’t have]

Since when did love become a competition?

As I love a good story, I’m going to impart one on you now.

I had two friends who both liked the same guy. They were good friends with each other before the bloodshed, but now? Not so much. You could go as far as to say that they are sworn enemies.

Seriously, when did we start fighting over guys with such seriousness?

My friends were quite normal, level-headed people, but then, let’s call him Brad, entered the scene. Yes, I will admit that Brad was hot, if you like that serious, brooding type. I do not, thankfully, otherwise it would have been a trio of sworn enemies. I don’t have the energy for that.

Brad, in fairness, did not lead either of them on. He simply had that flirtatious nature that some people have without realizing it. The problem is, that politeness/flirting was enough to make both of my friends think that he wanted them individually. [Read: Flirty vs friendly and how to read the subtle differences]

First the remarks started, then the backstabbing, then the cattiness. Finally, the claws at dawn… yes, it turned into an actual physical fight that resulted in one friend visiting the Emergency Room, thanks to a false nail ripping off her entire natural nail underneath. No joke. I told you it was a bloodbath. How can a fingernail cause so much blood?! Anyway, I digress.

Neither of my friends ended up with Brad, but that didn’t stop them going on an all out offensive, trying to make him regret his choice. All the while, their friendship lay in tatters, somewhere alongside my friend’s ruined nail. Did their offensive work? Well, Brad did tell me that he wished he had asked one of them out, but I guess that ship has now sailed. [Read: How guys flirt – 15 subtle things they do to impress a girl]

How to make him regret not choosing you: 6 easy but powerful steps

The reason I told you this story is because it showed me one thing: how to make him regret not choosing you. If you want to show a guy what he’s missing, there are a few things to bear in mind.

#1 Avoid fighting over him. My friend didn’t make this point very successfully, but it’s best to avoid fighting over a guy. Why? Because it looks desperate. If he is going to turn around and say he wants you, he’s far less likely to do it after he’s seen you with your fingernail hanging off. Lesson learned! [Read: 17 bad friends you should unfriend from your life]

#2 Make changes, but do them for you. They say that when someone changes their hair, that means they’re moving on. Make some changes, but not necessarily on your appearance unless you want to. Make those changes because you want to, and not because you want him to turn around with his tongue hanging out. [Read: 15 really powerful ways to make a guy like you again that works like a charm]

#3 Show him you don’t care, even you have to fake it. The best way to make him regret not choosing you is to show him that you don’t care that he didn’t. Of course, inside you’re seriously annoyed that you weren’t the one he opted for, but he doesn’t have to know that! Go out, laugh, smile, enjoy yourself!

#4 Make use of your social media. Ah, this one is underhanded, but the best way to showcase your good work is to make your new, exciting life very visible on your social media pages. Yes, selfies, check ins, tags, you name it, go for it! Just make sure it’s natural. [Read: 30 really wicked ways to make a guy jealous and win his attention]

#5 Assess why you’re so bothered. Seriously, if he didn’t choose you, why do you care about him now? That’s the question to ask yourself. Indeed, learning how to make him regret not choosing you hinges on you knowing the answer to this question.

If he didn’t choose you, that’s his problem, his mistake. You’ll go on to meet someone who does care and will choose you. The ironic thing is, when you do that, he’ll probably pop back into your life! [Read: How to tell when a guy is jealous – 25 green hints he just can’t hide]

#6 Live your best life. You might think this is a no-brainer, but if you want him to regret his choice, show him by making yourself happy and doing everything you’ve ever wanted. I mentioned making changes earlier, but this is more of an overhaul.

If you don’t like something, change it. This includes everything from your job to your home, your look to your hobbies. Whatever you need to change, go for it and watch your confidence grow.

Show him you don’t care

Still wondering how to make him regret not choosing you? Show him you don’t care, and that’s the best tactic of them all. He will wonder why you’re not bothered about his choice, and even if he’s with someone else, i.e. the person he chose, his ego will make him question your standing on the whole subject. Surely that’s a great feeling? [Read: Tired of chasing? How to make a guy want you instead]

If you’re curious about how my friends’ situation turned out, well, they’re still not friends. Brad is still hooked up with someone else, and he didn’t seem to regret not choosing either of them enough to go back on his decision. Maybe because rather than letting Brad see what he had missed out on, both of my friends went down a slightly different route.

Yes, he told me he wished he’d asked one of them out, but it was a fleeting thought, not something implanted in his brain. Why? Because rather than living their lives and focusing on themselves, they both tried to be everywhere he was. [Read: How to make him want you back – The art of getting a guy to miss you]

Seriously, whenever he posted something on Facebook, checked himself in, they turned up, both of them, despite the fact they weren’t speaking. To be honest, it smacked of desperation. Brad noticed it. Perhaps that is why he never seriously regretted his choice.

If you want to know how to make him regret not choosing you, turn your thoughts inwards. Ask yourself what you gain by chasing a man who didn’t choose you first. You deserve to be his first and only choice. If you must persuade him, that’s not going to feel good at all.

[Read: How to lose feelings for someone and let go of the might have beens]

Understanding how to make him regret choosing you is really a decision over whether you want him to regret it and ask you out, or whether you just want to sock it to him and move on. But either ways, really, is it even worth it?

How to Take Control of Your Love Life & Find the Love You Want

When you’ve tried everything from blind dates to dating apps yet you still feel lonely, learn how to take control of your love life.

Whether you’re single or not, feeling lost in your love life is no way to live. Feeling like your love life is out of your control is never a good feeling. Whether you are searching for your person or struggling in a relationship, you can learn how to take control of your love life.

Someone once said that everyone has the exact love life they want. Although I think that is a loose generalization that discounts mental illness, self-awareness, and abusive relationships, it is partly true.

You are in control of the life you live. No, you can’t force someone to date you. You can’t will yourself a happily ever after nor can you fix the person you’re with. But, you do have the power to take control of your love life.

[Read: How to find love and learn to be open to all that life has to offer]

What is out of control in your love life?

Before you can take the power back in your relationships with others or yourself, work out what needs your control. What is it in your love life that you’re unhappy with? What do you feel is out of your control?

Are you feeling hopeless about meeting the right person? Is your relationship feeling more tense than relaxing? Are you fighting to make it work with someone who makes you feel bad about yourself?

What is it that made you seek out this article? What do you want control of?

[Read: Why am I single? 10 things you might be doing that sabotage your love life]

For me, it was dating. I felt like I was constantly meeting terrible guys. Every guy I met was disrespectful, aggressive, or invisible. I wondered if there were only these types of guys left.

Of course, I wondered what I was doing wrong, but nothing came to mind. So, I put my best foot forward and tried not to be bitter about my past. I gave everyone the benefit of the doubt, but I just couldn’t seem to get out of this rut.

I didn’t want to stop dating because I’d never meet someone that way, so what could I do?

Well, I decided to take back control of my love life. Instead of using bad guys as an excuse for why I was single, I thought about dating differently. It took a while to pull myself out of this pattern, but eventually, I was able to go into dating without preconceived notions and met my boyfriend of over a year.

[Read: Banish these hugely false dating ideas from your mind!]

I decided that if I was going to get the love life I wanted, I must take control and take action myself. I couldn’t wait for my prince charming to show up and fix my love life. Instead, I did it myself.

Whether you’re single and trying to amp up your love life or in a relationship that feels like it has a life of its own, you can take control of your love life by pinpointing the issues and attacking them head-on.

How to take control of your love life

Learning how to take control of your love life isn’t as simple as following instructions on how to make a cake. It takes strength, practice, and handwork.

I didn’t find my boyfriend because I changed my mindset overnight. It took working on the way I thought about dating. I had to be open to things not working out. I had to take control of my present in order to get the future I wanted.

And you can do that too.

#1 Stop giving into old patterns. When you’ve been dating a while, it is easy to get comfortable. Even if you meet new people, you can fall into a pattern. You might go to the same place for first dates and share the same stories. If you want to know how to take control of your love life and aren’t happy with how things are going, branch out.

Try new activities on dates. Give into the conversation instead of pulling at your anecdotes. If you’re in a relationship and fight a lot, you don’t have to keep reacting the same way. You can take control of your behavior and have open and honest communication. [Read: 14 unrealistic expectations that can ruin your love life]

#2 Consider why you feel out of control. If you are looking to take control of your love life, it is because something feels out of your control. Is it your partner? Is it your lack of partner? Do you feel like you’re meeting the wrong people?

If you are unhappy with your situation, don’t just think about what is making you unhappy, but why? Why are you meeting the wrong people? Can you try a different dating app? Are you going back to your “type”? Are you used to being in a half relationship, so you revert back to that instead of being truly vulnerable?

Once you’ve nailed down why you feel like you don’t have control, work on that. [Read: 20 practical things to consider before giving up on love]

#3 Realize your worth. Even if you feel confident, underlying self-esteem issues could be what is holding you back. Dating people that aren’t right for you isn’t just about bad luck. When you fall for someone that isn’t right for you, it is because you believe that is what you deserve.

So many people ask why someone keeps reaching out after ghosting, and my answer is always because you let them. You interact with them and give them a chance even though they have shown their true colors. Is it because you’re lonely? Is it because you hope this time will be different?

Once you realize you deserve better than being someone’s second thought or last resort, you will let go of the people that aren’t treating you right and seek out the good ones. [Read: People who ghost and come back – How to handle the zombies of dating]

#4 Do things you want to do. Focus on what you like. Don’t go out on dates because you feel like you’re wasting time if you don’t. If you prefer to hang out at home with your friends baking, do that.

Your single time is only wasted if you aren’t enjoying yourself every moment you can. Do activities you’re interested in. I’m not saying to stop dating and wait for the right person to show up at your door, but making finding the right person your main goal neglects the rest of your life.

#5 Accept all outcomes. This was the hardest part for me when I was taking control of my love life. I would build up so much anxiety on dates because I expected it to work out. I was overthinking which made me cancel dates that I didn’t feel would go somewhere.

Instead, I went into dates thinking a relationship was the only acceptable outcome. Once I was able to have hope, but release those expectations, I felt so much calmer going on dates. I didn’t need to be head over heels for who I was meeting just open to all outcomes.

Once I accepted that a date could lead to a relationship, a second date, or nothing, I was able to go into dating with a lot more positivity. [Read: How to remain hopeful while dating and not let heartaches stop you]

#6 Let go of the past. If you want to learn how to take control of your love life, remember that your past teaches you a lot of lessons, but letting it control you means you aren’t controlling yourself. You can better see red flags, know what you want and don’t want, and even be more cautious.

These are all good things, but when you let trust issues from the past control your present, you aren’t learning anything but carrying your past along for the ride to your future. This prevents you from seeing all outcomes and truly being vulnerable. [Read: 14 first date red flags that speak a lot more than your date says]

#7 Stop predicting the future. The same way the past shouldn’t control you, your future shouldn’t either. Of course, you have plans and ideas about your future, but if you let that take over for living in the present, it will pass you by before you even realize it.

Learning how to take control of your love life is about appreciating the moments. Experience each date. Stop planning to be married by a certain age. Stop putting your expectations onto others. This can make you feel in control but you miss what is happening now. [Read: Dating for a month? Realistic expectations you need to keep in mind]

#8 Stop waiting. Don’t wait around for something that may never come. Whether your partner makes promises that never come true or that guy you met once isn’t texting back, waiting takes control away from you.

If you want a certain love life, waiting will not make it happen. Waiting for someone to call, ask, or text only leaves you feeling out of control and hurt. If you stop waiting for others to make a move, you can make your own.

#9 Stop responding before thinking. If you’re in a relationship filled with anger or tension, it is easy to blame our partner. We victimize ourselves because they picked a fight, criticize, or recede from the partnership. I’m not saying to take the blame yourself, but instead of reacting to their behavior as if you have no other choice, think about your behavior.

If they ignore you, are you ignoring them back? If they criticize you, do you snap and yell? Is your behavior what you would qualify as acceptable from someone else? Blaming others for your responses leaves you feeling out of control when in fact you have power over your actions.

Instead of falling into a pattern of arguments, try a different approach that will actually resolve the problem at hand. [Read: Why you keep having the same fight: How to break the unhealthy cycle]

#10 Trust yourself. Trust your gut. When you lose trust in yourself, you put it in others. That prevents you from making your own choices and doing what you want. You want things to feel right to you.

If a partner or date tells you you’re crazy or overthinking or even paranoid when you feel valid in your feelings, don’t give into that. Trust yourself because you know yourself better than anyone else.

When I was dating, I was very cautious about meeting strangers online. I made sure to get their full name, give it and their number to multiple people I trusted and always met in public. I had a number of guys tell me I was paranoid or crazy because I didn’t want them to know where I lived.

And I knew I was overly cautious, but it made me feel safe. Most guys didn’t understand that and insisted on picking me up for a date. Instead of giving in to their pressure, I didn’t go out with them. I trusted my instincts.

When I met my boyfriend, I told him the same thing. I wanted to meet in public at first because you never know. Instead of gaslighting me, he was respectful of my wishes. Trusting myself was the best thing I could have done.

[Read: Should you meet your Tinder match? When, where, and how to stay safe!]

If you want to change your love life, start by making a few small changes in the direction you want. With these methods, you can learn how to take control of your love life and feel free to do what you want. And most of all, you’ll be happier too!

How to Not Be Nervous for a Date and Feel Super Calm Instead

Going on a first date isn’t easy; there’s a lot of nerves that come with it. But I’m here to help. Here’s my advice for how to not be nervous for a date.

We’re only human; even your date is human. So, it’s natural for us to feel nervous ahead of a first date, but there’s a way to learn how to not be nervous for a date. Reduce those nerves and anxiety to have a better and calmer first-date experience.

It’s time to lose the jitters *at least some of them* and start enjoying your dating experiences. You’re about to learn some helpful ways to reduce your anxiety, so you can actually get to know your date without any distracting thoughts or feelings. Are you ready?

How to not be nervous for a date

Most of us have had or will have a first date experience. And they usually never turn out the way it’s shown in movies. There are only a few people who can walk into a date without feeling any jitters. It’s normal to feel a little anxiety and nervousness when going on a date.

[Read: How to face dating anxiety and fears and get out there again]

You don’t really know this person, and now you need to spend a couple of hours chatting and getting to know each other. It’s not so easy. And we’re all thinking about the worst-case scenarios like complete silence, lack of chemistry, and awkward moments.

Get rid of those jitters.

#1 Ask yourself why. Why are you feeling anxious? It’s important to ask yourself where the anxiety is coming from. Maybe you’ve had negative dating experiences in the past, and this is creating new anxiety in you. Whatever it is, dig deep and try to see where it’s coming from. [Read: Are you sabotaging your happiness unintentionally?]

#2 You make the plans. If you’re nervous about where you are going on your date, make the plans yourself. This will ensure that you pick a place that feels comfortable to you, which will reduce your anxiety. You always want to make sure you feel comfortable for the date – safety matters.

#3 Make for a short first-date. Now, not too short. But your date doesn’t need to be four hours long. Either make plans with a friend after or do a lunch date on a working/school day. This way, you know that the date will end at a certain time, and if things go well, you can see each other again. [Read: Casual first date ideas for a dreamy fun time]

#4 Don’t do drinks or dinner dates. If you’re nervous about awkward silences or having the date turn into an interview, don’t do dinner or drinks. Grab a coffee together and go for a walk, watch a sports game, or go to an art gallery. Do things that are activity-based; that way, you have something to talk about.

#5 Practice self-care. On the day of the date, give yourself some TLC. Take a relaxing bath, listen to some music, take a nap, or read a good book. Do things that will have you feeling your best. It’ll help you manage your stress before the date.

#6 Realize your date is probably nervous, too. Uh, hello! Your date is going out with you. Of course, they’re nervous. Have you seen yourself? You’re a beauty! Understand that what you’re feeling; your date is probably feeling as well. Everyone is vulnerable on the first date. [Read: 20 ways to perfect your first date conversation]

#7 Don’t talk about the date with too many people. Mentioning the date to other people will hype it up. And if you’re nervous, this isn’t what you want to do. Talk about it with someone you trust, and that’s it. When you talk about it with too many people, they’ll give you advice, usually contradicting advice, and will confuse you.

#8 Be mindful of your feelings. During the date, you may feel yourself getting nervous, and that’s okay. Take a deep breath and try to be mindful of how you’re feeling and what you can do at that moment to help yourself calm down. Remember, we’re all human; we’re all flawed.

#9 Think of your date as a friend. All good relationships start with friendship. You need to become friends with your date. And if the chemistry is there, it has the potential to bloom into a romantic relationship. To help with your nerves, think of your date as a friend.

#10 Do a workout that day. You have some pent up energy you need to get out of your system. So if you’re wondering how to not be nervous for a date, get your sweat on with a good workout. It’ll help release any stress you have in your body and bring in those positive endorphins. And that’s what you want.

#11 Have a glass of wine. Now, go easy on the wine. But, if you’re feeling nervous, have a glass of wine and take a breath. Too much alcohol is a big no-no on first dates; however, one glass of wine can help you loosen up and relax. [Read: Follow these rules for a memorable first date]

#12 Take a deep breath. You need to take a deep breath. I know it sounds a little cheesy, but it works. Breathe in through your nose, hold it for a couple of seconds, and then release the breath from your mouth. Do this a couple of times, and you’ll feel yourself calm down.

Now you know how to not be nervous for a date, so what are you still doing here? It’s time for you to get ready and go out on that date!
